It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of John R. Horney, on June 18, 2024. John, who was 54 at the time of his death, was an exceptional public servant who served as the ATCC Licensing Unit Supervisor since the ATCC’s inception. Prior, he was an integral part of the Field Enforcement Division of the Maryland Comptroller’s Office. John expertly handled licensing procedures and questions for manufacturers, distributors, and retailers across the state and was beloved by his colleagues for his vast knowledge, kindness, and dry wit.
Maryland born and educated – he earned his B.A. from Salisbury University in 1991 – John enjoyed a successful career in newspaper production before becoming a dedicated public servant. He worked in several of Maryland’s leading news outlets, including The Washington Post, The Capital (Annapolis) Capital, The Daily Times (Salisbury), and The Star-Democrat (Easton). An avid collector of comic art and sports memorabilia and known for his sweeping musical tastes and knowledge, John enjoyed sharing his passions with his wife, Randa, family, and friends.
John will be deeply missed by everyone at ATCC.
